What the world needs now is T and A…. August 15, 2008

You gotta give it to American Apparel, they’re consistent.  I respect that.  They have the market cornered on raunchy, offensive, misogyny-laden advertising.  Case in point, their latest magazine advert:

God bless Dov Charney,  because that man does not give a flying eff about political correctness, good taste, social mores, etc…He goes with his gut, or more aptly, his nether region….Sure, the product sucks – poor quality, ill fitting, overpriced.  As a side note, their swimwear is badass…

Moving on, I could care less that everything’s Made in America, “sweatshop free”, socially responsible, blah blah blah….But he’s got a real talent for marketing himself  (affectionately referred to as “Love Dov”) as a mythical rock star figure.   There was the infamous Jane magazine article where he whipped it out and did his thing (twice!!!) in front of the reporter AND…she wrote glowingly about him after everything was said and done…heh.  I can’t find it online anymore since Jane is (much to my dismay) defunct.  But, the article was RIDICULOUS.

He’s like the definition of charisma, because he’s a grade A freaknasty.  Who wouldn’t want to work for a man who pays his workers a reasonable $18.00 an hour and encourages “free love” as a company policy?  Described as a “lascivious…a cross between Terry Richardson and Taxi’s Judd Hirsch, circa 1977″.  Hotness.  In the early days of AA, he personally photographed all the ads himself.   It should also be noted that none of the models are professional.  Dov supposedly goes to local hangouts and approaches people (aka “jail bait”) he finds “interesting”.  The ads are also, notably, never airbrushed, which is VERY rare in this day and age.  He keeps it real.  Move over Don Draper…meet Dov Chaney.

Conor Oberst, Yes Please August 12, 2008

I’ve  never been a huge Bright Eyes fan, so I wasn’t overly excited about Conor Oberst’s new solo album with the Mystic Valley Band, but if this video and song are any indication, it’s gonna being pretty damn enjoyable.  I love the concept – cheap lo-fi projector and props, multiple costume changes, just some guys having fun…Doesn’t hurt that he’s pretty easy on the eyes.  Sooo cliche.  Can’t wait to see him perform at ACL…for the music of course.  Right…

HIPSTERS!!!

HIPSTERS!!!

The other day I was ranting about hipsters (scenesters, indie, club kids, whatever you want to call them…) with my friend Katie.  As someone who goes to a lot of indie music, art, design-related events, I encounter them on a regular basis.  Don’t get me wrong, some of my closest friends could be described as such…hell, I’ve even seriously dated a few.  I guess what sometimes bothers me about the whole hipster scene is the homogeneity, cutesy irony, self-absorption, and apathy for anything that really matters besides the latest party, band, trend, gallery opening, etc…Unlike previous counterculture scenes, they don’t stand for anything.  I’m sure that there were plenty of poseur Hippies, Beats, Punks, etc…but at least they had Hunter S. Thompson, Bob Dylan, Jack Kerouac, Vivienne Westwood, Malcolm McLauren – people who were symbols of the culture and stood for something bigger than themselves.  Can you think of any hipster counterpart?  I can’t. Well, as luck would have it, Adbusters‘ latest cover article is titled “Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization”.  As you may have guessed from the dramatic title, the author takes himself and the subject pretty freaking seriously.  Nonetheless, it’s worth a read.

As someone interested in advertising, I found this statement very interesting and, mostly, truthful: “Hipsterdom is the first “counterculture” to be born under the advertising industry’s microscope, leaving it open to constant manipulation but also forcing its participants to continually shift their interests and affiliations. Less a subculture, the hipster is a consumer group – using their capital to purchase empty authenticity and rebellion. But the moment a trend, band, sound, style or feeling gains too much exposure, it is suddenly looked upon with disdain. Hipsters cannot afford to maintain any cultural loyalties or affiliations for fear they will lose relevance.”

The conclusion made me laugh out loud, though.

“We are the last generation, a culmination of all previous things, destroyed by the vapidity that surrounds us. The hipster represents the end of Western civilization – a culture so detached and disconnected that it has stopped giving birth to anything new. “

Hasn’t the same thing been said by pompous, boring pricks during each generation?  “…the last generation…end of Western civilization” REALLY??!  Sheeesh, sounds like someone needs a PBR and an androgynous indie girl to dance with at a “nouveau disco-coke” party.  Sounds like fun.

I’m a bit late in posting this, but thought it was worth highlighting.  If I haven’t already told you, I really LOVE the “In An Absolut World” campaign brought to us courtesy of TBWA\Chiat\Day, NYKanye West was recently featured in a new hilarious installment, modeled after an old-school, late-night infomerical.

The print campaign can be found in various NYC subway cars

and was cleverly featured in the “Strictly Personals” section of The New Yorker.

Later on in 2008, Perez Hilton, Eddie Izzard, Editors from Thrillist.com, Treehugger.com, Style.com, as well as various Live Earth Filmmakers will join him with their own episodes.

However, I’m still partial to the 1st deliciously bizarre installment featuring Zach Galifianakis, and Tim and Eric from “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!“.  Probably won’t sell much vodka, but sooo effing funny….
