Well, here goes my first post…I just moved to Austin last week on Sunday and…I absolutely LOVE it. I got really lucky with my housing situation – I’m living in a huge, beautifully furnished house that I found through Craigslist with some other girls that are already in my advertising grad program. I really couldn’t ask for much more. My mom moved me in, was beyond impressed by my wise living choice and got me all set up – furniture, new Civic, food, etc…(thanks again, Sheila and Rich!). Setting up everything from IKEA kinda sucked ALOT, but you get what you pay for, so I don’t know why I thought it would be so easy. But it sure does look nice. Gotta love that Swedish design aesthetic….
Beyond my marvelous house, I have been taking in as much of Austin as I can possibly handle. Every day I discover something new and great of this quirky city. Comparison escapes me when attempting to describe this place. I keep telling my parents that it’s like everything that I love about California (LA and San Fran, in particular) – healthy, energized, independent, full of great art and music, perfect weather….But lacking the pretense and attitude you might find in those cities. People are sooo nice here. I walked into a shop on South Congress the other day and struck up a conversation about the latest Terrence Malick film being filmed here with the shop girl. Apparently one of his set designers came in, bought a bunch of stuff, I bought some of the same stuff, etc…It’s so effortless meeting people here.
And don’t even get me started on Town Lake and Barton Creek Greenbelt. I run everyday on Town Lake, which is, the most amazing runners mecca I’ve ever encountered. And I went hiking on the Barton Creek Greenbelt all day Sunday. Hiking!!! If you’re not from Florida you won’t understand my utter elation. I got a job as a server at Maudie’s today, which is one the best Mexican restaurants in a sea of amazing ones in this town. And I think I got a paid internship with Seiko Instruments. I don’t find out until next week, but I think I did really well. AND, did I mention, it’s paid! Woo. Anyways, I’m going to see Ladytron this Friday and The Helio Sequence on Saturday. Gotta love a town where there is way too much to do every night, especially when it involves music.
Also, I have to mention Barack’s clenching the Democratic nomination. I am beyond excited. That might be a total other post though…
